  • Target Wallet launched for in-store mobile payment

Target, however, wants more customers to shop with Wallet and is already working out a way to get them to use the feature even if they don't own a REDcard.

"Wallet in the Target app makes checkout easier and faster than ever", said Mike McNamara, Target's chief information and digital officer. Wallet is now restricted to Target's REDcard credit card and debit card.

With Wallet, consumers can pay for purchases using their Target REDcard and find savings with Cartwheel - all within a single scan of their phones at checkout, the company said. In a recent post, America's second-largest retailer announced that it had rolled out Wallet, its own mobile payment system that is now active as a feature for Target's iOS and Android apps. According to the company, the feature will also allow customers to keep Cartwheel offers, Weekly Ad coupons and payment options in the same app.

With Wallet, customers can check out in-store using their smartphone while also applying Cartwheel digital coupons or discounts after scanning their barcode.

It appears that Target is still not keen on accepting Apple Pay as a mode of payment in its onsite stores.

Retailers such as Walmart, CVS and Starbucks launched their mobile wallet entries well before Target did, but the retailer is making similar arguments to try and woo shoppers to pay via mobile: Enjoy quicker checkout than paying via other methods, and combine mobile pay capabilities with rewards and deal offers.

The retailer said the Wallet feature will eventually support the ability to store and redeem Target GiftCards. For shoppers looking for speed and convenience, the NFC-free mobile offerings of Target and Walmart could inhibit widespread adoption.

The rollout of Wallet isn't the first of its kind for retailers - Walmart launched Walmart Pay in 2015 and is now available in all of its stores nationwide.
