  • Poll: Utahns say Orrin Hatch shouldn't run again, but Mitt Romney should

Trump himself seemed to confirm the theory during a speech at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, when he addressed Hatch before the crowd.

Romney has been preparing to run for Hatch's seat on the long-held assumption that the 83-year-old would retire, according to Politico. They said Hatch visited Trump during the first week of his presidency where they spoke about Utah's national monuments and the then unoccupied seat of the Supreme Court. "I don't know that he knows what he's going to get with Romney, but it's not going to be what he's got with Hatch", Jowers reportedly said.

President Donald Trump is reportedly working behind the scenes to convince Utah Republican Sen.

James Curry is a political scientist at the University of Utah. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to run for an eighth term. Orrin Hatch to Utah on Monday to announce his decision to roll back the size of former President Barack Obama's last-minute designation of two national monuments in Utah.

Kirk Jowers, a friend of Romney who served as the chairman and general counsel of his political action committee, told Politico that while "Hatch is a known entity for Trump and has been really goof for the president", the 2012 GOP presidential nominee is more of an unknown. "We hope you will continue to serve your state and your country in the Senate for a very long time to come", he said.

Romney has reportedly been meeting with local GOP power brokers, contacting major donors and campaigning for local candidates -moves seen as steps toward a potential 2018 run for the seat now held by Hatch, according to reports that surfaced earlier this month.

Such concern apparently exists outside the White House as well.

"If Steve had a choice between Orrin Hatch and Mitt Romney, he would pick Hatch 10 times out of 10", an unnamed source close to Bannon told the Examiner. Later, when Trump assumed office, he floated Romney as a potential candidate for Secretary of State, but snubbed him in favor of former Exxon C.E.O.

Breitbart editor in chief and former Trump advisor Steven Bannon also is reportedly trying to keep Romney from running for Senate in his effort to keep establishment Republicans out of Washington.
