Ryanair to Recognize Pilot Unions to Avert Christmas Strike

Ryanair and the Irish pilots' union look set to meet for talks next week in a bid to avert a pre-Christmas strike.

The budget airline has agreed to meet with pilot's union for the first time ever, but passengers may still face disruption.

As of Sunday morning, there has been no response from the unions.

IMPACT responded, saying the strike would go ahead unless management agreed to talks before that, to allow them to ensure there was substance in the offer and to understand how the airlines' recognition of unions would proceed.

Ryanair has sought a meeting with the Irish Airline Pilots' Association on that day, according to The Independent.

Europe's largest low-priced carrier offered on Friday to recognise pilot unions for the first time in its 32-year history in a last-minute attempt to avert its first-ever pilot strike at the start of the holiday season.

"It has invited each of them to talks to recognise these unions and the representative bodies for pilots in Ryanair in each of these countries", said Mr Byrne.

IMPACT has suspended the action threatened by pilots next Wednesday.

Confirmation that the meeting with Impact will now take place Tuesday in advance of the Wednesday deadline was confirmed by Ryanair on Saturday.

German union Vereinigung Cockpit said the onus was now on Ryanair to "prove that this announcement is serious".

Niall Shanahan, a spokesman for Impact, a union to which IALPA is affiliated, said: "We indicated to Ryanair that we were happy to meet them on Wednesday, but we would not be in a position to consider suspending the scheduled industrial action until we met them".
