The Pentagon Has Been Investigating UFOs, New Report Reveals

"The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program" was led by former military intelligence official Luiz Elizondo, who resigned from the Pentagon on October 4.
The New York Times reported on Saturday that the hush-hush program, tasked with investigating sightings of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, ran from 2007 to 2012 with $22 million in annual funding secretly tucked away in U.S. Defense Department budgets worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
Beyond preparing for the next field of battle, or advancing a massive arsenal that includes nuclear weapons, the Pentagon has also researched the possible existence of UFOs.
Initial funding for the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program came largely at the request of former Democratic Senator Harry Reid, long known for his enthusiasm for space phenomena. However others, including Elizondo, say while Pentagon funding for the program ended at this time, the program does still exist. Upon leaving the Pentagon, Elizondo said he left a successor to keep running the program, but did not reveal their name.
Reid enlisted support of two other lawmakers, Ted Stevens, the late Republican senator from Alaska, and Democrat Daniel K. Inouye, representing Hawaii. In 1947, the US Air Force began probing more than 12,000 UFO sightings before it was officially ended in 1969.
"This was so-called black money", Reid admitted to the Times.
In one instance, the program looked at video footage of a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet surrounded by a glowing object of unknown origin traveling at a high rate of speed in a location that officials declined to identify, the paper said. This program was founded and funded specifically to investigate reports of unidentified flying objects. The detailed account of the encounter was given by Chris Mellon, a former member of Senate Intelligence Committee, who is engaged in a new initiative, spearheaded by Elizondo, called To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science. The private company specializes in promoting UFO research for scientific and entertainment purposes. In the video, the Navy pilots can be heard trying to understand what they are seeing.
The New York Times says documents from the operation describe unusual speeding aircraft and hovering objects.
Reid said, "I'm not embarrassed or ashamed or sorry I got this thing going". "I think it's one of the good things I did in my congressional service".
Reid retired from Congress earlier this year, told the New York Times, he was proud of the program. He said he was quitting in protest of internal opposition to the program as well as the dwindling attention that was paid to their findings.
"I left to find an environment where investigating these phenomena is priority number one", he said.
