Using facial recognition technology, Facebook can alert you to any photos in which you're visible regardless of whether or not you've been tagged.

The feature, which is powered by Facebook's artificial intelligence technology, will alert users when someone else uploads a photo of them.

An additional feature will also inform users if anyone across the entire social network tries to post a profile picture containing them, Joaquin Candela, Facebook's director of applied machine learning, said. These settings boil down to Facebook demanding forgiveness after refusing to ask for permission, and it may not sit well with users.

This would allow Facebook to implement more features that use facial recognition, such as account recovery, though that remains to be seen.

Facebook's facial recognition works by analyzing the pixels in a photo you're tagged in and creating a string of numbers called a template to identify your face.

Google looking at slower fingerprints on Pixel 2 XL after Android 8.1
In the meantime, however, there is one workaround that should fix the reaction speed of the Pixel 2 XL fingerprint scanner. Since 2013, Android users can access Google Now by saying the hotword " OK Google ".

If you aren't in the audience, Candela says, you won't receive a notification.

Facebook is also introducing a feature that will help people with visual impairments; the company says that with the aforementioned facial recognition technology, people who use screen readers will know who appears in a photo in their News Feed even if people aren't tagged.

"We're doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook", Candela wrote. More specifically, the poster must set the image's audience to "everyone" for you to be notified. "When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template".

Head into the settings and you'll find a new "on/off" toggle for Face Recognition. The new facial recognition features will be available in your settings soon, but not in Canada or the European Union where Facebook does not offer facial recognition.

Facebook's use of facial recognition will be governed by an on / off switch. That includes the United States but not Canada and Europe, where regulators have raised concerns about Facebook's existing facial recognition features and how the company complies with privacy laws. "The person who blocked the original account is in control, and must initiate contact with the new account in order for them to interact normally".
