United States ambassador denies own comments, then denies denial

  • New US ambassador calls his 'no-go areas in the Netherlands' claim fake news

When President Donald Trump announced Hoekstra's appointment as ambassador to his country of origin, The Washington Post reported, a Dutch newspaper said the president was putting "a Dutchman in the Netherlands - but it is a Dutchman from the Netherlands of the '50s".

"There are politicians that are being burned ... and yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands", said now-US ambassador to the Netherlands Peter Hoekstra in 2015 at the David Horowitz Freedom Center's 2015 Restoration Weekend. Hoekstra's response to being shown the clip is truly impressive: He denies using the term "fake news" just moments earlier.

When it comes to diplomacy, the apple doesn't fall far from the Trump.

.

"We would call it 'fake news.' I never said that", replies Hoekstra. This is actually an incorrect statement. Yeah, we would call that fake news.

"No?" the reporter says, stunned, and actually turns his head, presumably to his producer, wondering what to do with Hoekstra, who is clearly lying.

Zwart: Is that fake news? "Because that's what you really said". Chaos in the Netherlands. "And yes there are no-go zones in the Netherlands".

Korea For Widespread 'WannaCry' Cyberattack
The North Korean government has repeatedly denied any involvement with WannaCry and has decried allegations as a smear campaign. The country probably employs 1,700 state-sponsored hackers, backed by more than 5,000 support staff, according to ASPI.

Zwart was questioning the new ambassador about those comments, specifically his claim that there are "no-go zones" in the Netherlands.

"At one point, you mentioned in a debate that there are no-go zones in the Netherlands, and that cars and politicians are being set on fire", Zwart says in a video of the interview. "We would call it 'fake news.' That's not what I said". "I didn't use the words today", Hoekstra said.

The minutes-later contradiction causes Zwart to turn and look around in bewilderment.

Mr Hoekstra: No. I don't think I did.

Hoekstra's early misstep doesn't bode well for his time in the Netherlands - it shouldn't be so easy to tell when a diplomat isn't telling truth. Prior to being named to the ambassadorial position, Hoekstra, who was in office between 1993 and 2011, was reportedly a frequent guest on a podcast hosted by anti-Muslim activist Frank Gaffney.

Hoekstra, a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has not publicly responded to the issue.
