  • Texas Tech prediction: Can Red Raiders contain Quinton Flowers to win Birmingham Bowl against USF?

Texas Tech is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven games overall, is 2-7 against the number in its last nine bowl games and is 1-4 at the betting window in its last five games versus a team with a winning record. Keke Coutee caught 11 of those passes for 187 yards and a TD.

Key Player: Shimonek. Besides taking a sack on fourth down, the senior quarterback was 10-of-17 for 145 yards and a touchdown.

Then South Florida marches down the field, but had to settle for a 25 yard field goal by Emilio Nadelman. The senior passed for 311 yards and four touchdowns in this one. He also only rushed the ball five times for 11 yards.

But the Red Raiders left Flowers and the Bulls too much time to strike back, and strike back they most certainly did. Texas Tech did a fantastic job of neutralizing Flowers in the first half.

The McCants touchdown capped a wild fourth quarter in which USF outscored Texas Tech 21-10, with Flowers having a role in all three scores.

The Red Raiders' defense forced USF to go three-and-out, and the Red Raiders started on their own 35-yard line.

At the beginning of the second quarter, the Red Raiders defense stopped Flowers from completing two deep throws to force a fourth down that the Bulls could not convert. McCants 6th touchdown reception of the season.

South Florida quarterback Quinton Flowers found Tyre McCants with 16 seconds left for a 26-yard touchdown pass to defeat the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech continued to pile up the yards but the South Florida defense kept the Red Raiders out of the end zone and off the scoreboard in the second quarter. Both were the best players Texas Tech had on offense against South Florida, and sparked the Red Raiders' offense whenever it stagnated. Shimonek put the Red Raiders up 34-31 with a touchdown pass with 1:31 left to play. The Red Raiders answered with a 33-yard field goal from Hatfield to take back the lead, 27-24, with 5:02 left in the game.

Flowers - named the game's MVP - finished the chilly, damp day with 417 total yards, becoming the school's career rushing leader and the American Athletic Conference's all-time total yardage leader in the process.

A play into USF's next drive, Flowers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Scantling to put USF up, 31-27, over Tech with 4:26 left in the game.

Shimonek took Texas Tech across midfield in the final seconds but his desperation pass on the run was well short of the end zone.
