Korean Officials Allegedly Involved in Ballistic Missile Program

The department says Kim Jong-sik, a veteran rocket scientist, is a key figure responsible for advancing the program to a point where the regime is successfully testing ICBMs capable of reaching the USA mainland.

North Korean state television ripped the recent unanimous United Nations vote to deliver stronger sanctions against Kim Jong Un as "rigged up by the US and its followers [and a] grave infringement upon the sovereignty of our republic".

The United States is imposing new North Korea sanctions that target top officials responsible for missile development.

The United States on Tuesday sanctioned two senior North Korean officials for their involvement in the regime's illicit ballistic missile program. The US Treasury revealed that the two officials sanctioned are Ri Pyong-chol and Kim Jong-sik. According to the Treasury, Kim is allegedly a "key figure" in a project aimed at finding a way to switch North Korean rockets from liquid to solid fuel.

Pyongyang launched its Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite in February 2016, which much of the worldwide community viewed as a disguised ballistic missile test. China has also ordered North Korean companies operating in the country to close. North Korean citizens working in other countries will also have to return in the next 24 months, preventing the country from obtaining foreign currency.
