  • The facebook-owned app is ready to move on from Blackberry and some old Windows phones. On New Years Day the app will stop working on phones running Windows 8.0 or older Blackberry OS or Blackberry 10

WhatsApp will stop working on a selection of smartphones and mobile platforms in the new year, reported The Independent. The company has withdrawn support from these devices and will focus on more popular platforms. Nokia's Series 40 devices, for example, will be supported till December 31, 2018 while Android 2.3.7 and older devices will be supported till February 1, 2020. "About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia", it reads.

WhatsApp has today announced that it will end support for BlackBerry OS, including BlackBerry 10, as well as Windows Phone 8.0 and older devices on December 31, 2017, VentureBeat is reporting.

As of now, users still running these operating systems can not open new WhatsApp accounts or re-verify old accounts.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp confirmed its plans to sunset the BlackBerry and Windows Phone versions of the service. In WhatsApp's own words - "This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp". Oh, and WhatsApp claims its app could stop functioning at any time, so maybe it's time for that upgrade.

"These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future".

Family killed in twin-engine plane crash in Florida
Local officials said first responders were dispatched to the scene within minutes but had to move slowly because of the dense fog. Victoria was a school teacher in Baltimore, Maryland, and Peter was a law student at the University of Maryland, Judd said.

BlackBerry and Windows Phones users will no longer be able to create new accounts, and won't also be able to verify existing accounts-but of course, they will be able to continue using the WhatsApp app.

Superfans and holdouts using some older smartphone operating systems will have to bid adieu to WhatsApp messenger soon-or at least the most updated versions of the app.

WhatsApp might not work on old Blackberry and Windows devices anymore but it is not the first time the company has pulled the plug on a ecosystem for the first time.
