Facebook gives Aadhaar name prompt to some new users, says not mandatory

  • The report mentions that the Aadhaar prompt isn’t pushed to everyone who registers for a Facebook account. Also the prompt is only encountered when creating a new account from the Safari web browser on iOS devices

In the screenshot Facebook is seen asking the user his/her first and last name, which should be same as the one on the user's Aadhaar card. Nandan Nilekani, the architect of Aadhaar and then UIDAI Chairman, himself had stated that the Aadhaar could be used as a tool for identity verification across social media networks back in 2011 at the Aadhaar Developer Track conference. Facebook is now testing this new feature on limited number of users and not all users may be able to see this. Fortunately, that is not what's happening here. The prompt was optional and was limited to a small set of users signing up on Facebook via mobile site. However, using your original name not only makes it easy for your friends to discover you, but also curb the spread of fake accounts. This policy of the Facebook created uproar in the country.

He is quoted as saying, "We want to make sure people can use the names they're known by on Facebook, and can easily connect with friends and family".

Online social media operator Facebook has now started asking for Aadhaar-based information for new users in India.

It is worth noting that this is just a pilot programme to sign up on Facebook using the names that are available on their Aadhaar cards. Sometimes when you ask people for a real name, people get confused as to what it means.

It is no secret that there are innumerable fake account users on Facebook - and the number is growing nearly every passing day. We weren't able to reproduce the prompt. In April 2017, the Aadhaar details of 1.4 Mn registered users were made public on the Jharkhand Directorate of Social Security. Some are also apprehensive about safety of Aadhaar data after reports emerged that private details of citizens were leaked on government websites.

More so, whether users in other countries are similarly prompted to use their real names with specific reference to relevant government IDs in the region or in the future will be, is not clear which raises questions on why this move in India alone.
