  • Family identifies Wichita man killed by police in possible 'swatting' prank

Police and FBI are investigating whether an argument over an online game prompted the prank call, which did not appear to involve the victim.

Camera IconThe man was reportedly playing Call of Duty before the incident occurred. The Glendale Police Department confirmed that Barriss, the suspect in the Kansas "swatting" incident, received a two-year sentence in the previous threat case. Went to the police to inform them so my house doesn't get swatted. "That cop murdered my son over a false report in the first place".

The prank is becoming quite popular with online gamers across the country.

The FBI estimated that 400 such cases of "swatting" occur annually with numerous prank callers using some sort of caller identification spoofing software to disguise their phone numbers. Sometimes they will call local non-emergency lines instead of trying to prank 9-1-1.

Yesterday, we told you about a terrible incident where police officers responded to an anonymous call reporting a fatal hostage situation in Wichita, Kansas. "The original call, we were told someone had an argument with their mother and dad was accidentally shot".

"That was the information we were working off of". Finch appeared at the door to the house and, following verbal commands from the officers, stepped forward with his hands up.

Officers subsequently surrounded the home at the address the caller provided and prepared for a hostage situation. It has not been revealed whether or not the deceased 28 year old man who was shot and killer had a weapon or not. It isn't believed that the unnamed man shot back at police.

Multiple people hurt after shooter opens fire at Long Beach business
Multiple victims were reportedly transported to a hospital, but their conditions or the number of people remains unconfirmed. Video posted from the scene to Twitter showed a large law enforcement response blocking off streets in the area.

Authorities said Finch died at the hospital and that he was unarmed. Family members identified the man as Andrew Thomas Finch, CNN affiliate KAKE reported.

Finch's address was given to the alleged "swatter" over a $2 bet on a video game rivalry.

"The irresponsible acts of a prankster put people's lives at risk", said Livingston, the deputy Wichita chief. A man said his father had been shot in the head. We have a lot of information to go through'.

Professional Call of Duty players on Twitter have attempted to explain the situation themselves (via CharlieINTEL). He said no one has been arrested in connection with the hoax. Prominent celebrities like Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher have been swatted, but the prank is most well-known in video gaming communities, where it has been used as a form of revenge. The dispute escalated with one threatening the other with swatting. This resulted in the police arriving at a nearby home where an innocent man was apparently enjoying a quiet night sans any actual hostages.

Officials do, however, say that there are limits to what can be done to combat swatting.

The person who was supposed to be the target of the prank tweeted: 'Someone tried to swat me and got an innocent man killed'.

Police said no other victims were found inside the home, and at least four people that were inside the home are safe and have been taken in for questioning. Police were spotted in the front yards of two different houses sitting across from each other at the corner of Seneca and McCormick.
