  • The aircraft belonged to Nature Air and crashed in Guanacaste northwest Costa Rica

Dawn and Matthew Wolfe, who have been vacationing in Costa Rica for a month, said they and their three children were sitting in a restaurant near Punta Islita Airport when the plane took off.

A plane crashed in Costa Rica on Sunday killing at least 12 people, majority foreign tourists, the country's security ministry said.

The ministry also said later that 10 foreigners were passengers aboard the plane, which was flown by two Costa Rican pilots.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that "multiple U.S. citizens" died in the crash.

Authorities said although they have the names of the passengers form flight manifest, they are waiting to officially confirm the identities of the victims, The Associated Press reported. "We express our condolences to all those affected by this tragedy".

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

The plane went down in a heavily wooded area.
