North Korea will remain committed to the country's nuclear development in 2018, according to a report released on Saturday by state-run news agency KCNA.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday (Jan 1) that the United States will never be able to start a war against North Korea now that his country has developed the capability to hit all of the USA mainland with its nuclear weapons, as he warned that the nuclear launch button was always on his desk.

Despite Trump's threats to "totally destroy" the communist state, Kim's regime will continue to boost its nuclear arsenal next year, the article said.

"The US should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my table", he said during the speech, as provisionally translated by the AP.

"The entire area of the USA mainland is within our nuclear strike range", he continued, while claiming that now the U.S. "The United States can never start a war against me and our country".

Sensex Wraps up 2017 on High Note, Finishes at Life-Time High
The Sensex advanced by 116.53 points, or 0.34 per cent, while the Nifty gained 37.70 points, or 0.35 per cent, during the period. The Sensex clocked its best performance in recent years in 2017, rising by 7,430.37, or 27.91 per cent year-on-year.

During the speech, Kim also called for better relations with South Korea - a suggestion he has made more often than he has acted on, the news wire noted. He also said that "as long as there's no aggression against" North Korea, it does "not intend to use nuclear powers".

"North Korea's participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people and we wish the Games will be a success".

The New Year's address is an annual event in the North and is watched closely for indications of the direction and priorities Kim may adopt in the year ahead.

Kim also reportedly highlighted the isolated state's economic achievements during the speech, and nodded towards trying to improve the country's standard of living.
