Winston throws late TD pass, Buccaneers beat Saints 31-24

  • New Orleans Saints defensive end Al Quadin Muhammad sacks Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Cardale Jones late in the game during a preseason game at Stub Hub Center in Carson Calif. Sunday Aug. 20 2017

Perhaps the Saints can chalk up this game to an emotional letdown in front of a sparse crowd after they had already clinched a playoff berth one week earlier with their most emotional victory of the season at home against the Falcons.

For the Saints it's time to look at the film of Tampa, and then move on quickly to Carolina.

After three consecutive incompletions, Winston found tight end Cameron Brate for a 12-yard gain on fourth-and-10 and the dramatic drive was on.

New Orleans, which won its first NFC South title since 2011, did not blink, though. Isaiah Johnson recovered it and returned it for a 7-yard touchdown. It drove 92 yards in 13 plays and took up almost seven minutes for a touchdown and 24-20 lead with 7:07 to go in the fourth quarter at Raymond James Stadium.

While Winston's strike went to Chris Godwin and not Evans, it did, however, break Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino's record for most touchdown passes before a player's 24th birthday.

Tenants of the building, a mix of native New Yorkers and Latino and African immigrants, scrambled down fire escapes. Police say on Saturday that five men and a teenage girl also perished in the fire that killed a dozen people.

Brees turned one of the mistakes into the Saints' first touchdown, throwing 43 yards to Michael Thomas to set up Kamara's TD run that finished a 65-yard drive.

Evans joined an elite group, reaching 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth-straight season. Tampa Bay had taken the opening kickoff and driven 75 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown and 7-0 lead.

The rookie's 7-yard TD run on the Saints' first offensive possession made it 14-7.

Patrick Murray, whose missed an extra point in the second quarter was the difference on the scoreboard when Winston launched the winning drive, made a 42-yard field goal to help the Bucs pull within 24-23 with four minutes left.

And they still showed big-play ability on defense with two interceptions by rookie safety Marcus Williams and an interception by linebacker Craig Robertson.
