James Damore sues Google for firing him over his gender memo

  • Google Memo Author James Damore Sues Company For Discrimination Against White Males

James Damore, the ex-Google engineer who was sacked for a controversial August memo about, among other things, women in tech workplaces, filed a lawsuit on Monday against his former employer for discriminating against conservative white males.

He also distinguished himself by arguing that the gender gap at tech companies is the result of "biological causes", and that the men are simply better equipped than women for tech jobs.

The suit includes as evidence of discrimination a meeting held in March ("Women's History Month") in which two women, Ruth Porat, the Chief Financial Officer of Google, and Eileen Naughton, the Human Resources Director of Google. Damore also accused Google's senior leadership of silencing conservative views.

In one post, a Google employee states that simply being a white male is "actively harmful to others".

There are a series of images, screenshots and conversations from Google employees actively espousing discriminatory rhetoric toward straight white cis-males and Conservatives in an unrepentant fashion.

Damore and Gudeman say in the suit they aim to represent all Google employees who have been discriminated against on the basis of their sex, race, or political views.

According to the lawsuit, people who "expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace and relevant to Google's employment policies and its business, such as "diversity" hiring policies, "bias sensitivity" or 'social justice, '" were targets.

We Are Blood in critical need of Type O blood
Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available. While all blood and donation types are welcome, there's a critical need for type O-negative and platelets .

The contents of the lawsuit are bound to drum up controversy, with no-holds-barred wording that accuses Google of a hiring policy that favours women and "minority" candidates and "shames" business unit managers who fail to meet diversity and gender "quotas". The lawsuit alleges Google awarded bonuses to employees who criticized Damore, kept internal blacklists to prevent conservative employees from getting opportunities at the company and failed to protect workers who supported President Trump.

A representative for Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He claimed that women's "neuroticism" and men's "higher drive for status" are among the factors that contribute to gender disparities in tech.

Not only was Damore fired after his memo went public, but as he puts it, others who spoke out against him were rewarded.

The suit isn't the only one Google is having to defend itself against.

After his firing, Damore became something of a TV-circuit celebrity, controversially likening being a white male conservative at Google to "being gay in the 1950s". The class action suit is also demanding for a jury trial.

But Damore said he would "welcome" the chance to go back to work for Google ― whose workforce is still disproportionately white and male ― and continue fighting for the rights of men, Caucasian people and conservatives.
