"His visit next month would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests", Khan said in his statement.

USA president Donald Trump said late on Thursday he no longer plans to attend the opening of a new United States embassy in London.

Trump claimed he had scrapped the trip because he didn't want to open the new US Embassy in London - blaming former President Obama for relocating the diplomatic headquarters.

Prime Minister Theresa May invited Trump for a state visit when she met with him at the White House soon after he took office a year ago.

The decision to move the embassy from its historic location in London's Grosvenor Square was made under President George W. Bush and announced in October 2008.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, said the President's tweet made clear that it had been a mistake for May to move so quickly to extend the invitation to Trump previous year. "Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda", he added. "It seems he's finally got that message", Khan tweeted. He was scheduled to visit the British capital next month to open the new facility.

When asked if the Prime Minister was concerned that Khan was damaging the "special relationship", the Downing Street spokesman replied: "No, the USA and the United Kingdom are natural, resilient and strong partners and allies and we do more together than any two countries in the world".

Just after the inauguration by Trump, almost 100,000 demonstrators rushed on the London's streets for the unanimity of Women's March with worldwide anti-Trump rallies.

The Guardian reported U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is likely to take Trump's place.

British media reports said no new dates have been offered for Trump's visit indicating the high-profile visit might be called off soon.

"An invitation has been extended and accepted [for Trump's visit]" a spokesperson said at a briefing attended by Business Insider. Trump was one of the few world leaders to endorse the move, and May's government has been courting closer ties to Washington, particularly in the area of bilateral trade.
