World number five Venus Williams and US Open champion Sloane Stephens were high-profile casualties on day one of the Australian Open Monday, but Roland Garros victor Jelena Ostapenko survived.

The unseeded, world number 78, player took out the American in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Stephens was also forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International because of a right knee injury.

Notably, the seven-time Grand Slam champion lost to her sister Serena Williams in 2017 Australian Open and emerged as the runner-up.

"Why do I have to play under a different set of rules?"

Sock, who capped a memorable 2017 by reaching the semi-finals on his debut at the ATP Finals in London, was beaten 6-1, 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 by Japan's Yuichi Sugita. "I tried to do that today". She ended last season without a title. I don't have to make myself uncomfortable because [the tournament is] ill prepared.

Stephens has not won a match since her stunning triumph in NY and a 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 defeat by Zhang Shuai made it eight losses in a row. "I'm just happy to be on court".

The defeat leaves the Williams family out of the second round of the for the first time since 1997, since Serena Williams, Venus' sister is not participating in the tournament.

"Obviously, it wasn't my day.it wasn't some of the American women's day but I guess that it happens and that's tennis".

2013: The American suffered a defeat at the hands of Russian star Maria Sharapova in the third-round. sharapova had defeated Williams in straight sets in just 79 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

The 2018 Australian Open proved to be an American nightmare on Day 1 as the Top 3 USA seeds exited Melbourne, some in ugly fashion.

Well, the first two matches on centre court involved the two oldest women in the draw, Venus and Italy's Francesca Schiavone, who are both 37 - plus 212 days in the former's case, six fewer for the latter.

In 2013, Bencic won the junior French Open and Wimbledon titles, and was named the ITF World Junior Champion. As for the banana, she added: "I was just trying to wait for what I asked for to come and the chair umpire deemed that it wasn't a good enough reason to wait for anything".

German 12th seed Julia Goerges continued a winning streak going back to last October, defeating Sofia Kenin of the US, 6-4, 6-4.

Ryan Harrison beat Dudi Sela in a sometimes heated five-setter in front of a partisan crowd and qualifier Mackenzie McDonald also bucked the trend for the Americans.

The Spaniard made a fine start in his bid to win only his second ever Australian open wrapping up a dominant win in just over an hour and a half.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki got away to a winning start, beating Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu, 6-2, 6-3.

The 26-year-old entered this year's competition with a career-high ranking, but her Australian Open dream soon turned into a nightmare during an ill-tempered and contentious 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 loss to Hungary's Timea Babos.
