  • Aymeric Laporte reportedly has a £57million release clause in his contract with Athletic Bilbao

Aymeric Laporte has been left out of Athletic Bilbao's squad to face Eibar as Manchester City move closer to completing a deal to sign him.

The player is set to travel to England on Tuesday to undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract ahead of joining the Premier League leaders this month.

Since then, the young Frenchman has signed a new contract which has a release clause for £55 million and despite already spending around £50 million on one 22 year old defender, that clearly hasn't put Guardiola off signing another young centre-back.

Pep Guardiola refused to be drawn on City's reported pursuit of Laporte when asked about the potential deal on Friday.

City were linked with a move for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window but Guardiola didn't think that represent the player's value.

On the rumour that Laporte will join City on Monday, he said: "Let's see if this rumour which seems so widespread is confirmed".

Laporte was left out of the Bilbao squad that drew 1-1 with Eibar on Friday night, indicating that he is set to leave the Basque club.

Laporte has already dazzled after five-and-a-half years in La Liga, but the centre-back's motivation to earn global recognition appears to have intensified his desire to become a hit at the Etihad.
