Tracks from a previous year's album may be entered provided the track was not entered the previous year and provided the album did not win a Grammy.

Predictably it was a hot topic on Twitter soon after, prompting United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley to post that the segment was "trash".

Mars won best R&B album, best R&B performance and best R&B song in the pre-telecast.

The Grammys opened the show with a mix of rap, rock and comedy featuring Kendrick Lamar, U2 and Dave Chappelle. Earlier this week, key music executives called on artists and employees to wear a white rose at the Grammys in support of Time's Up and #MeToo, the movements against sexual abuse and harassment.

Time's Up didn't come up until 2½ hours into the show but Janelle Monáe made the most of it, declaring, "To those who would dare try and silence us, we offer you two words: Time's up". It's not just going on in Washington.

There were other stand-out performances Sunday night, including a touching tribute to those who lost their lives past year at concerts around the world.

Later on in the Grammy show, three country artists gathered in a solemn tribute to victims of a mass shooting at a Las Vegas country music festival and a bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in England.

Hillary Clinton appears on screen reading an excerpt from the book "Fire and Fury" during a skit at the 60th annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, in NY.

Paris zoo evacuated and temporarily shut after around 50 baboons escape
The alarm was raised late Friday morning when a staff member happened upon some of the primates gathering in a service corridor. Baboons are not naturally a danger, but can attack humans and cause serious injuries if they feel they are being threatened.

Last year, Kendrick delivered one of the most memorable performance of the night. The moment was genuine, angelic and exultant, blowing away virtually every other performance of the night.

The only problem is, an entirely different scenario was expected by many, in what was loudly touted as a landmark year of long overdue change for the Grammys.

"I just want to say there are some incredible artists out there making music that deserve to be acknowledged that don't always get acknowledged because of popularity contests or numbers games and that's kind of unfortunate", she said.

The singer got help in the form of 9-year-old stand-out singer, JD McCrary, who wowed the audience inside Madison Square Garden and those watching at home alike.

The Rolling Stones, once judged rock's kingpins, won the third Grammy of their career - for best traditional blues recording. Other multiple winners included Ed Sheeran, CeCe Winans, Justin Hurwitz and Jason Isbell. At least Alessia Cara took home the new artist trophy.

Before Cardi made headlines with her wonderful performance, she turned heads during her Grammy red carpet interview. Posthumous Grammys were also handed out to actress Carrie Fisher, singer Leonard Cohen and engineer Tom Coyne, who worked on Mars' "24K Magic" album.

As it has in recent years, the Grammys downplayed the awards for performances by the industry's biggest stars.

He'd already won for rap/sung collaboration (with Rihanna), rap performance ("Humble"), rap song ("Humble") and music video (ditto).
