According to Sandberg, the changes give Facebook "a very good foundation to meet all the requirements" of the 28-member bloc's new data rules called the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR, which apply to any company that keeps data on European Union citizens. The revamped Facebook privacy centre brings together all these core privacy settings into a single hub, making it easier to manage your privacy controls. It as well invites the users to go through its Privacy Checkup as an extension of the campaign, for the better experience in managing data.

Facebook also says that it's publishing its privacy principles for the first time, detailing how the company handles user details.

"Our apps have always been focused on giving people transparency and control and this gives us a very good foundation to meet all the requirements of the GDPR and to spur us on to continuing investing in products and in educational tools to protect privacy", Sandberg said. "For example, throughout 2018 we're hosting workshops on data protection for small and medium businesses, beginning in Europe with a focus on the new General Data Protection Regulation", said Erin Egan, chief privacy officer at Facebook.

A particular level of scrutiny is being placed on the larger tech companies that process and store reams of data about millions of people around the world as well as the EU.

Starting today, the social media giant will show educational videos in the news feed "that help you get information on important privacy topics like how to control what information Facebook uses to show you ads, how to review and delete old posts, and even what it means to delete your account".

Aside from the more visible Privacy Center, Facebook has made its privacy principles public.

Last but not the least, Facebook is working on resources to help other companies in terms of privacy services. The videos will appear in the News Feed, he said. "We also meet with regulators, legislators and privacy experts around the world to get input on our data practices and policies", the blog post said.

The GDPR rules apply both to European companies and to American companies who collect the data of European residents. Facebook notes that it's accountable for maintaining privacy while also noting that it's a process of continuous improvement.
