The renewal indicates the Justice Department still believed Page, a former investment banker, acted as an agent for Russian Federation.

Rosenstein approved the continued surveillance of a Trump associate past year, according to a report in the New York Times on Monday that once again thrust the former U.S. Attorney for Maryland into the spotlight.

Republicans' secret memo - that they claim reveals evidence of an internal bias within the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department - reportedly shows that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave the green light to extend surveillance of an aide for President Trump's campaign, according to new reporting from The New York Times.

The House Intelligence Committee could vote as early as Monday on whether to declassify the memo and make it public.

"To the extent that the House, I think, has advocated that it's publicly released, I think the president is receptive to that", he said. "Based on numerous news reports, top officials at the F.B.I. have engaged in conduct that shows bias against President Trump and bias for Hillary Clinton".

According to the memo, Rosenstein extended the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) order on Page, a former Moscow-based investment banker whom a Russian Federation spy had tried to recruit, according to a 2013 investigation.

Grammy Awards 2018: Hillary Clinton wows crowd with surprise cameo

Carter Page, former campaign advisor for Donald Trump.

Staffers working for House Intelligence Chair Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) compiled the memo from DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation files. The memo was reportedly shared with many Republican members of Congress, but has not been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Department of Justice.

Democrats have also claimed that the memo, which summarizes classified information held by the Justice Department, is misleading and paints a "distorted" picture, and they have prepared their own counter memo they want to release. Carter served as a Trump foreign police adviser until September 2016. The newspaper cites "three people familiar" with the memo.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has long topped the list of Justice Department officials whom President Trump accuses of being responsible for the prolonged probe into his campaign's possible ties with Russian Federation during the 2016 election campaign.

Lawmakers appearing on Sunday shows - including Sens. When Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey in May, Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to lead a special counsel.
