Facebook users are spending less time on the site, stock falls 5%

  • Facebook announced Monday that it’s going to put more local news in users’ news feeds as part of an ongoing campaign to make users “happier.”

Facebook said 126 million Americans may have seen Russian-backed political ads and posts.

Social media giant Facebook is all set to alter its "News Feed" and will going forward prioritise the placement of local news on it.

Also sounding alarm bells, Facebook's user growth slowed in the fourth quarter and it experienced its first-ever decline in daily active US and Canadian users to 184 million from 185 million in the prior quarter. (Eat your heart out, E.F. Hutton!). A recent change to Facebook's algorithm that prioritizes content from friends and family over content produced by businesses effectively cut off the news feed as an organic distribution channel for publishers.

Despite my whimsical take on how Mr. Zuckerberg and his minions make decisions, the truth is that Facebook is purely data-driven.

Zuckerberg, though, this month described Facebook as being at a crossroads, as the world's largest social media network seeks to stem the spread of disinformation in elections and in daily life.

By passive, think of reading a text post or just gazing at photos of products or watching a video.

People tell us they come to Facebook to connect with friends. That type of post is not engaging enough for Facebook's taste because it does not stimulate meaningful conversations among friends, which is the direction in which Facebook wants to go-for now.

Earlier this month, Zuckerberg said his personal goal for 2018 is "fixing" Facebook's many problems.

SpaceX Targets Feb. 6 Maiden Falcon Heavy Launch
News of the Falcon Heavy's hoped-for launch date comes days after the rocket's successful test on Wednesday, at Cape Canaveral. According to Musk himself, the launch is scheduled for February 6, when it will blast off from 39A at Cape Kennedy in Florida.

"Daniel Ives, an analyst at GBH Insights, said the firm's financial results were "robust" and described Facebook's strategy as 'the right medicine at the right time".

The kind of content Facebook now favors is longer-form conversations between people, or a long string of comments that are triggered by a post deemed relevant or thoughtful or newsworthy. "I talk about Facebook more than my friends do".

This is just the beginning of our efforts to prioritize high-quality news.

Facebook shares were up 43 percent during the past year as of Tuesday's close. If someone wants to share, she doesn't need to be asked; if the person needs to be goaded to share, Facebook frowns.

But the comment underscores the hard situation Facebook finds itself in, as its social network has come under fire for spreading misinformation and propaganda, as well as for incentivizing consumers to spend too much time on its site.

When you subscribe to a page, Facebook automatically activates the Follow option.

Aaah, I feel better already... This could have the side effect of burying outside opinions on local events, but that may be exactly what the social network intends.
