Sony has announced the beta release of its PlayStation 4 System Software version 5.50, which introduces several improvements.

Notifications will be sent to children during gameplay so that they know when they should save and quit. Family managers will be able to track playtime, as well as set restrictions either based on certain time windows or on total amount of time spent playing. Some games already have supersampling as part of their PS4 Pro Enhanced features, though this new setting will bring that same experience to games that don't already include that feature. In the "This PS4" tab, users can see a list of all applications installed on the PS4.

This includes the ability to import images via USB and then modify pictures to get the ideal look. Oh well. There will always be another PS4 update! Like the previous feature, this one is all about giving players the choice to truly make things their own. You'll also be able to import custom wallpapers from a USB stick to use as your Home Screen, as well as your own logo or background for your Tournaments team page. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you'll know you can not play the game until you've re-subscribed. Or, if your kid begs for another hour on the PS4 while you're stuck at work, you can add the extra time via your smartphone or PC; just log into your PS account via your device's web browser. The "This PS4" tab lists all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system, and the tab with your name/avatar lists all the apps that you purchased with your PSN ID.

If you are getting swarmed with bought as well as earned games from PS Plus, the PS4 Update 5.50 has you covered. This will also allow you to see who's now online. If one's PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock appears next to games obtained from PS Plus. You'll also be able to access media shortcuts - when using Spotify on the console, for example, opening the Quick Menu and pressing square will allow you to control the volume. According to the description of the, it will allow players to 'improve the image quality of some games on a TV with 2K resolution or lower.' It is noted, however, that the results of the adjustment will vary from game to game, and even warns that the 'frame rate might change.' if you're willing to risk a reduction in frame rate for better graphics, the PS4 supersampling mode might be worth a try. As previously leaked those with a PlayStation 4 Pro but who do not own a 4K TV can take advantage of the Supersampling mode, which renders the image at a high resolution but then squishes it back in to 1080p.
