A broad arctic front is "draped" across the Midwest, said Bob Oravec, senior branch forecaster at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. We have HIGH CONFIDENCE in snow falling on Saturday (afternoon/evening) and bitterly cold weather. Since 1884, Chicago has had only nine days with 12-plus inches of snow.

Mike Spiel's forecast is now calling for as much as 10 inches of snow in total accumulation by Friday. The warning was issued from 9 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday for Waukesha, Milwaukee, Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha counties.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from tonight until the late morning on Friday for those along Interstate 80 with a Winter Storm Warning in effect for those between Hwy 30 and Hwy 20.

Just as a powerful storm finally passes through the Midwest, yet another is on its way to dump even more snow in that region as well as the Northeast.

Lance VandenBoogart, a meteorologist with the Sioux Falls National Weather Service, said the snow is expected to begin modestly around 1 p.m. Thursday, becoming more intense later in the afternoon.

DeKalb County is bracing for another dumping of the snow on the area. Frey said Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy, with the sun finally returning on Monday, but temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s making it a good weekend for skiing and snowboarding. Much of northern IL had seen between 8 and 12 inches of snow by Friday afternoon, CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said.

The intention is to allow DPW crews the opportunity to properly remove snow and ice.
