And It Just Hurts: Apple Employees Are Walking Into Walls

  • Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends

According to a Bloomberg report and our favourite "Friday story" in a while, Apple workers are making habit of walking into the panes of glass. The building, crafted by famed architect Norman Foster, immortalized a vision that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had years earlier. In fact, it sounds like Apple's glass walls may be turning out to be a major headache for many employees-and we mean that literally.

Apple's new "spaceship" campus, called Apple Park, is still in the process of being finished, but its futuristic glass design is already causing some painful problems for its employees. But the idea of using glass, however, isn't the most impressive detail about this structure, Apple's design chief Jony Ive said.

If there's one common theme that runs through the whole building, however, it's the use of glass.

Recognizing the problem, employees began to put sticky notes on glass doors so employees would know they were there. Employees are not allowed to discuss anything related to Apple with outsiders. But the visual warnings were removed because they detracted from the office's sleek design. Another person familiar with the situation said there are other markings to identify the glass.

The building is created to house some 13,000 employees.

Place thousands of people distracted by iPhones in a building that is mostly transparent, and perhaps the results are inevitable.

It is not clear how many incidents there have been, but at least seven people were reportedly injured on the first day after staff moved in.

According to California law, "employees shall be protected against the hazard of walking through glass by barriers or by conspicuous durable markings", so the Labor Code reads.

An 83-year-old woman sued Apple in 2012 when she broke her nose after walking into an Apple Store's glass door. A Silicon Valley-based spokeswoman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration referred questions about Apple's workplace safety record to the government agency's website.

The Independent has contacted Apple for a comment.
