  • Russia's ice hockey team qualifies for Winter Olympic semifinals

Lindsey Vonn cast a quick glance toward the sky after finishing what was likely her final Olympic downhill run, shrugged her shoulders at seeing her time and shook a friendly index finger at her good friend. That put the combined a day after the downhill, which meant Shiffrin would have been compromised in an event in which she is favored to win. She won a gold medal in her first event on Valentine's Day in Pyeongchang, South Korea, winning the giant slalom. But last month, Vonn showed she is far from finished. The location of these Olympics only makes for that much more of a powerful experience for Vonn, who is nearly certainly competing in her last Olympics.

"This track is just fantastic, I think it's a dream for everybody to ski on this course, me too", the American said. Vonn was fastest and Shiffrin 23rd in Sunday's first training run. Though she won a World Cup downhill race in Lake Louise, Canada in December, she has chosen her speed events carefully - and normally with an eye toward World Cup points, which aren't available at the Olympics.

At 33, Vonn becomes the oldest female medalist in Alpine skiing at the Winter Games.

The star American made her debut on Friday night.

The downhill was considered Vonn's best and last chance to win a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

As notes, Vonn also has the Greek word for "believe" written on her right glove. She'll run in the combined event on Thursday. Among the competitors is American Mirai Nagasu, who in the team competition became the first USA woman to land a triple axel.
