  • Mercedes and Ferrari cars for F1 2018 poised to be revealed

Ferrari has unveiled its 2018 Formula One auto - the SF71-H - at an event at its headquarters in Maranello.

The first chance to measure up against Mercedes' new auto will come in pre-season testing next week in Montmelo, Spain.

While the Brackley team are on a run of four consecutive title doubles, Ferrari will complete a full decade without either world championship should they ultimately leave 2018 empty-handed.

The event was attended by the entire Ferrari team including drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, as well as development drivers Daniil Kvyat and Ferrari-backed Sauber reserve Antonio Giovinazzi.

"I think we need to look after the driver's safety, but what we have implemented is aesthetically not appealing and we need to come up with a solution that simply looks better". The vehicle, which has a sort of cage in front of the seat to comply with new rules, was unveiled in the presence of Ferrari President Sergio Marchionne and Piero Ferrari.

Nigel Mansell says Red Bull or Ferrari may do "something special" to sign Lewis Hamilton, however, at the end of it all he expects the Brit will remain with Mercedes.

Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene said the auto was an example of "Italian excellence".

"Our goal is to always be faster. With this auto, it's designed into it so you shouldn't see it when you're driving".

The new challenger has a longer wheelbase to move it more into line with rival Mercedes' design.

"The step that we have done in 2017 was incredible", he said.

"What has changed? The main differences I would indicate are we have a longer wheelbase - slightly longer wheelbase - compared to previous year".

Ferrari have not won the constructors title since 2008 with Raikkonen last winning the drivers title for Ferrari in 2007.
