That's according to the latest prediction from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]. While the flu continues to be widespread in 48 states, the CDC is citing fewer hospitalizations and deaths as a sign the country might have reached peak season. Flu season usually peaks in February.

Now, FluMist is on the recommended list of flu vaccines, allowing insurance companies to pay for its use.

Work started this week on next season's flu vaccine, with experts working off forecasts about which strains of the influenza virus will be making the rounds.

People 65 and older have a higher dose vaccine they can take because we know that the regular vaccine wears off in about six months in people that are 65 and older. While individual flu cases are not reportable, the agency monitors flu activity through the Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) Sentinel Surveillance System, made up of healthcare providers in MS who report the percentage of patients with flu-like symptoms to a statewide database.

Last week, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System had so many influenza patients they issued a news release limiting visitors at Watauga Medical Center, Cannon Memorial Hospital and The Foley Center.

So far, there have been 2,289 cases reported in Luzerne County.
