Facebook ends experiment to split publishers into their own news feed

  • Those who tested out the new feeds said they were'less satisfied with their experience and in some cases found the split to be far too complicated. The move to divide the News Feed also sparked outcry from publishers who feared the move would drive

Posts from friends and family would continue to show up in the normal news feed, but posts from brands and publishers would be segregated into their own separate channel called "explore feed".

In recent weeks, Facebook announced a drastic change to the News Feed - a single feed, not split - that prioritizes social engagement among family and friends over Pages and other public content. Facebook has been criticized many times in the past for its role in spreading fake news, which has led the company to admit it can sometimes be damaging to democracy.

One channel was for posts from friends and family and the other was for posts from pages that users follow, such as news outlets. Although people want to see less posts from Pages, the idea of completely separating Pages and individuals has proved to be a step too far.

Mosseri said this initiative will "better address the feedback we heard from people who said they want to see more from friends and family".

"We also received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information, and that we didn't communicate the test clearly", he added.

Storm Emma: New Red alert issued for snow
In addition to the red warning areas, lesser Met Office warnings for snow are covering many other parts of Scotland. The snow will be accompanied by very strong easterly winds leading to severe drifting.

This strategy got underway in October after Facebook launched a separate "explore" feed in affected countries, drawing immediate condemnation from the news organisations and businesses affected.

The product formally launched last October as an option for U.S. users to find additional news and entertainment from Pages that aren't in a users' news feed.

"Many people told me they thought that if we could turn down the temperature on the more divisive issues and instead focus on concrete local issues, then we'd all make more progress together", he said. Some users were upset that the company failed to adequately communicate the test to them, and so it will work on addressing that problem with future design tweaks. A different version of the feed was available in the rest of the world, and it will also be discontinued this week.

The site has been very public about the changes it's making to turn around its image, and we expect there'll be more announcements soon. While it was initially presented as a way to discover new content, the firm has disvoered that it isn't "effective".
