  • New weather satellite built in Colorado will launch on Thursday

According to NASA, the new GOES-West will cover the area between New Zealand and North America thereby providing seamless and high-definition images, videos and data of the weather conditions.

News Brief: A next-generation GOES-S weather satellite, the second of its kind, rose into orbit at 2:02 p.m. PT (5:02 p.m. ET) today from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. Further, these satellites are destined to provide images and results on weather in and around the United States which helps the agency decide and evacuate the people from vulnerable regions.

The new GOES weather satellites feature a suite of sophisticated instruments that meteorologists say represent a "quantum leap" for forecasting accuracy. This will allow forecasters, for instance, to see smaller wildfires and more accurately track their movements. The acronym stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. This will extend the life of GOES-R constellation to 2036 as many more satellites will be launched in coming years. GOES-16 also observed the uncertain path of Hurricanes Irma and the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Maria in September. Besides fire, lightning and tropical storms, the satellite can also track the influx of charged particles and radiation from the sun called space weather. The satellite will provide real-time weather reports on the western coast of the US thereby extending the range where NOAA can track weather conditions. Together, GOES-S (which will be renamed GOES-West) and GOES-East will be able to focus on four locations to refresh views every minute, or two locations to refresh views every 30 seconds.

The satellite will provide faster, more accurate and more detailed data, in near real-time, to track storm systems, lightning, wildfires, coastal fog and other hazards that affect the western United States. NOAA, NASA, universities and private sector researchers will use the data and results to craft the next GOES series. "It just takes them much more rapidly and in many different colors and with much better resolution than the past imagers".

Panthers release veteran RB Jonathan Stewart
Indianapolis is going to release Frank Gore, whose style Carroll has long admired from back when Gore was romping with the 49ers. Remember Marshawn Lynch in Seattle? He made his only Pro Bowl in 2015 after rushing for 989 yards and six scores on 242 carries.

"The new satellite will augment observations over the Pacific Ocean and around mountain ranges where radar coverage is limited or blocked", said Joe Pica, a National Weather Service manager.

After it launches, GOES-S will undergo six months of tests, then be operational late 2018.

GOES-S will be launched into geostationary orbit, which is at a distance of 35786 km from the Earth. "The geostationary satellite, the GOES series, is a crucial component of today's global observing system". GOES-T is expected to launch in the 2020 timeframe and GOES-U will follow suit around 2024.
