A collapse of the Iran nuclear deal would be a "great loss", the United Nations atomic watchdog's chief warned U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, giving a wide-ranging defence of the accord and his agency's work under it.

"And above all to put pressure on the United States to meet its commitments under the deal and not to allow it to present illogical and illegal demands", Zarif added, according to an account by the foreign ministry.

On Saturday, Brigadier General Jazayeri had said that the Islamic Republic's prerequisite for talks on its missile program is for the U.S. and certain European states to destroy their long-range missiles and nuclear weapons.

A senior Iranian security official on Monday said the missile programme of the Islamic republic is not a threat to any country.

Le Drian faced immediate pushback over French concerns about Iran's ballistic missiles, starting with Iranian students waving signs at Iran's Mehrabad International Airport protesting his comments.

Hardline Iranian media reacted angrily to Le Drian's visit with headlines like "The Rude Guest" and "Weapons of mass seduction".

"The Iranian authorities told me of their heavy concerns on the humanitarian situation in Syria and their desire to see an end to this catastrophe", Le Drian told reporters. 'Pinning the blame on others and repeating outdated scenarios and baseless accusations against others will not help the Bahraini government resolve its problems with its citizens, ' said foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi on the ministry's website.

Trump had threatened to scuttle the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal unless amendments were made to it.

Despite Le Drian's tough talk on missiles, France remains firmly behind the agreement.

On Monday, Le Drian inaugurated an "unprecedented" show of items from the Louvre in Paris at Tehran's National Museum.

The head of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said Monday that "Iran is implementing its nuclear related commitments" and that "it is essential that Iran continues to do so".

"Iran has learned to rely on its deterrent power", Zarif said.

He official said that those machines could be brought back into full service if the 2015 nuclear deal - formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action - were to collapse.

That continued with Iran's armed forces spokesman, Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, who this weekend said over the weekend that Tehran would only give up its missiles when the West abandons nuclear arms.

Despite their differences, Iran has welcomed French efforts to re-engage economically and politically.
