Jerry Brown: Trump 'Going to War Against the State of California'

  • Attorney General Jeff Sessions will speak about ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’ issues at an annual conference organized by California Peace Officers’ Association according to the U.S. Department of Justice

The nation's top cop will speak about "sanctuary jurisdiction" issues at an annual conference organized by California Peace Officers' Association, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

"This is exactly what Sessions wants: to coerce state and local officials in California and beyond to be enablers in President Trump's aggressive deportation machine". The lawsuit is the latest salvo in an escalating feud between the Trump administration and California, which has resisted the president on issues from taxes to marijuana policy and defiantly refuses to help federal agents detain and deport immigrants.

The attorney general said California officials are violating the law to promote an agenda the American people fundamentally reject.

The Trump administration has officially taken California to court in an effort to undo state legislation that protects undocumented immigrants. Speaking at a law enforcement event in Sacramento, Sessions did not mention Brown by name, but he did talk about what he considers the missteps of Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and state attorney general Xavier Beccera, saying California's position as a sanctuary state "directly and adversely impact the work of our federal officers".

Santa Clara University law professor Pratheepan Gulasekaram argued that the sanctuary state law had a good chance of surviving the federal challenge. Rather than effectively force millions of hardworking immigrant families to go underground, the state imposes some very basic and modest limitations on the circumstances in which it gives ICE the run of the place. "Federal law is 'the supreme law of the land.' I would invite any doubters to Gettysburg, and to the graves of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln", Sessions said. It was carried by state Senate leader Kevin de León, a candidate for U.S. Senate, who has led the anti-Trump resistance in the Legislature.

The Crown Prince spoke on the social changes now being felt in Saudi Arabia that have come against a backdrop of sweeping reforms. The contracts for them are among the first to be commissioned in development of NEOM.

But what Sessions said next really put California on notice.

Sessions strongly criticized Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf for her unusual public warning recently of an operation by federal immigration officers.

The 10 amendment of the U.S. Constitution "provides California with the right to decline to participate in civil immigration enforcement", Becerra said. Brown says the actions are about dividing America. The Department of Justice is seeking a preliminary injunction to block California from enforcing those laws.

Brown said he is still willing to cooperate with Sessions on immigration enforcement targeted at criminals, which he said is possible because of limitations he demanded in SB 54. "Her actions support those who flout the law and boldly validates illegality", the attorney general said.

"I understand that we have a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration, but the law is in the books and its goal is clear". On Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared in Sacramento, where he announced the lawsuit while expressing outrage in what can only be characterized as a lecture. Sessions was hopping mad while echoing ICE Director Thomas Homan's previous accusations that Schaaf had given the heads up to 800 criminals who managed to avoid arrest.
