Manafort pleads not guilty again

  • Paul Manafort gets a trial date

Prosecutors asked for the trial to come before a related trial Mr. Manafort is set to face in Washington in September, while Mr. Manafort requested a November date.

The trial is one of two on Manafort's schedule in 2018. It is expected to last eight to 10 days.

The former high-powered Washington lobbyist previously pleaded not guilty to five other federal charges, including failing to register as a foreign agent while representing Ukraine's pro-Kremlin government, during a separate arraignment in Washington.

Manafort is charged in Washington with making false statements about his foreign lobbying work, which he primarily did for Ukrainian politicians, and engaging in a money laundering conspiracy. Both indictments came from Robert Mueller as he investigates Russia's influence over the 2016 US presidential election and if anyone on Trump's team, including Manafort of course, had anything to do with it.

Manafort, who has been indicted on 32 counts by Mueller primarily related to bank fraud and his work for a Ukranian political party, wrote to an intermediary just before Trump accepted the Republican nomination that he'd be willing to give Deripaska "private briefings" if he required them.

During the hearing in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Judge T.S. Ellis III put Paul Manafort on home confinement, requiring him to wear a Global Positioning System monitoring device, and set a trial for July 10.

Two weeks ago, the men's Russian-connected attorney Alex Van der Zwaan was charged with misleading the Federal Bureau of Investigation about work he did for Manafort and Gates. The split in venues, prosecutors explained, is because the alleged crimes also occurred in the Eastern District. Downing suggested Thursday that Manafort would like to face all the charges in Virginia.

That agreement requires him to offer information on any matters that special counsel Robert Mueller deems relevant.

Newly released court documents show that a federal judge reprimanded Paul Manafort for breaking a gag order she had imposed on his case.

Manafort is innocent of the Virginia charges, his spokesman Jason Maloni said after the indictment was announced. He faces up to 15 years on the charges of filing false tax returns and up to 20 years on the charges of failing to report foreign bank accounts.

Jackson said she wouldn't punish Manafort for his February 23 statement.

Manafort is already on home confinement and under Global Positioning System monitoring in the District.
