  • US Holocaust Museum Decides To Take Back Award To Burmese Leader Over Ethnic Cleansing Concerns

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was awarded the "Elie Wiesel Award" in 2012 for resisting the country's military dictatorship, including serving 15 years of house arrest. ". It is true that Aung San Suu Kyi lacks real power over the military, which retains a quarter of seats in parliament and runs other institutions".

The Holocaust Museum is dedicated to the victims of National Socialism. They speak Rohingya or Ruaingga, and they have been denied citizenship in Myanmar since 1982.

"We had hoped that you - as someone we and many others have celebrated for your commitment to human dignity and universal human rights - would have done something to condemn and stop the military's brutal campaign and to express solidarity with the targeted Rohingya population", the museum said in a letter to Ms Aung San Suu Kyi.

The museum announced Wednesday that the Elie Wiesel Award given to Suu Kyi in 2012 would be rescinded.

The refugees are fleeing a military operation in which security forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.

The Holocaust museum encouraged Aung San Suu Kyi to cooperate with United Nations efforts to examine and prevent the campaign, and to grant the Rohingya citizenship and full rights, which they do not have.

The museum said Suu Kyi failed to live up to the standards it expected of the award's recipients.

'President for life' not a bad idea, Trump says of China proposal
That has left little doubt over what official line the roughly 3,000 delegates gathered in the Chinese capital are to follow. The US President only had words of approval concerning Chinese President Xi Jinping's tenure "for life".

In a report published on December 12, 2017, the global humanitarian organization said the deaths of 71.7 percent or 6,700 Rohingya were caused by violence. But many Rohingya living in the crowded, unsanitary camps have said they do not want to return to Rakhine after fleeing atrocities including murder, rape and arson attacks on their homes.

The museum's letter to Aun San Suu Kyi accuses her of promoting "hateful rhetoric against the Rohingya community" and urges her to take a stance on the issue with a quote from Wiesel: "Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim". The U.N. has described the systematic violence by Myanmar against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state as possible genocide and ethnic cleansing.

In Dhaka, a senior Bangladesh cabinet minister accused Myanmar of obstructing efforts to repatriate roughly 750,000 Rohingya refugees, saying it was unlikely the displaced Muslims would ever return to their homeland.

The UN assistant secretary-general said that during a four-day visit to Bangladesh, refugees told him "credible accounts of continued killings, rape, torture and abductions as well as forced starvation" in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine.

Bloomfield acknowledged: "We understand the hard situation you must face in confronting decades of military misrule and violence in your country and that institution's still powerful constitutional role".

"The severity of the atrocities in recent months demands that you use your moral authority to address this situation", the museum said.
