A veteran's home in California's Bay Area is under lockdown after reports of shots fired. "We will continue to update you as we get more information", said state Department of Veterans Affairs spokesman Johsua Kiser in an email.

AN ARMED man has taken three people hostage at one of the largest veterans homes in California, United States. Authorities said at least 15 to 20 shots were fired in Building G, starting about 10:30 a.m.

Jan Thornton of Vallejo, California, was among hundreds of relatives anxious how their loved ones were coping with the lockdown.

Larry Kamer told The Associated Press that his wife, Devereaux Smith, was at the party and told him by phone that the gunman had entered the room quietly, letting some people leave while taking others hostage. Thornton said she was anxious about how her dad's coping with the stress, considering his age, PTSD and slight dementia. Although no casualties have yet been reported by law enforcement, Napa County Fire Captain Chase Beckham revealed that a hostage situation is unfolding, and the gunman has barricaded himself within the center.

He does not know if the shooter was a veteran receiving treatment from the home. Police have not confirmed the report.

According to CNN, the veterans home is the largest in the country and is home to some 1000 elderly and disable residents.

The hostages are employees of The Pathway Home, a counseling service for veterans who suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and not residents of the facility north of San Francisco, Napa County Sheriff John Robertson said at a news conference.
