British Prime Minister Theresa May defended her meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday as activists protested Saudi Arabia's involvement in Yemen's humanitarian crisis. However, in recent years, the government has come under increasing scrutiny over its support in the western backed and Saudi-led war in Yemen.

Critics remain unimpressed. Hundreds protested his United Kingdom visit outside the prime minister's residence at 10 Downing Street.

They discussed Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" initiative, which is Mr Bin Salman's plan for the future of his country.

As the Crown Prince touched down on United Kingdom soil Green party leader Caroline Lucas asked: "Isn't it time we stop giving the red carpet treatment to despots and dictators?"

The Prime Minister is said to have touched on the conflict and humanitarian crisis when she met with Mohammed bin Salman - who raised eyebrows for a widespread advertising campaign to mark his visit.

He added that the Saudi-UK Strategic Partnership brings together eight joint programs.

A fiery exchange in parliament between May and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn underlined tension in Britain over Prince Mohammed's trip, which was aimed at building a broader economic partnership between the two countries, but has sparked anger about alleged human rights abuses and the war in Yemen.

The persecution charity Open Doors ranks Saudi Arabia as the 12th worst country in the world to be a Christian.
