  • Kenyan rivals meet for talks following election strife

The news came as Rex Tillerson, US secretary of state, arrived in Kenya on Friday afternoon.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga have agreed to reconcile and soothe tensions after last year's bitterly contested presidential election, and re-election.

He said the United States was also eager to engage Kenya in "The Big Four" to assist in its delivery, especially on relevant investments. And he said he was "looking forward to more opportunities to trade" with Kenya.

Mr Tillerson praised President Kenyatta for reaching out to NASA leader Raila Odinga, saying that was a major milestone in consolidating national unity. "A free and independent media is essential for safeguarding democracy and giving all Kenyans confidence in their government".

While political violence did not come close to that which followed the 2007 vote - when over 1,100 lives were lost - the disputed elections led to the deaths of over 100 people, majority shot by police.

Kenyatta added that the two leaders would begin to discuss "what ails us and what creates division amongst us".

Miguna, whose deportation was ruled illegal by Kenya's High Court, said in his statement that he would return to Kenya on March 26 "to continue the struggle for electoral justice...."

Kenyan rivals meet for talks following election strife

Miguna Miguna, a prominent Kenyan opposition lawyer and politician who was deported to Canada in February, denounced the Kenyatta-Odinga reconciliation.

"It's a really good step towards harmonizing the country", said Brian Wanjoki, a pedestrian.

"As we fight ostensibly to save ourselves from each other, the reality is that we need to save our children from ourselves".

"After the meeting between the two leaders yesterday (Friday), it was clear that the chapter of political competition in the country is over".

The Kenyan government shut down three television channels in January on the day that Odinga took a symbolic presidential oath in a mock inauguration.

He said he is keen to see an increasing footprint of USA companies and businesses that have chosen to establish their regional bases in Kenya. "... You know the West has been very keen on trying to get Uhuru and Raila to meet".

While Andati called the agreement on unification significant for healing Kenyan politics, the devil will be in the details.

The meeting did not happen as the result of pressure from Western countries, there was no external pressure on the two leaders from western countries, specifically the U.S. for the leaders to hold the talks ahead of USA secretary of state Rex W. Tillerson's three-day visit beginning on Friday.
