Austrian attackers killed outside Iranian diplomat's home

Police say an Austrian soldier shot dead a knife-wielding man who attacked him outside the Iranian ambassador's residence in Vienna.

But after he failed to repel him, the soldier shot the man at least four times with his handgun, said a police spokesman.

The spokesman said the guard initially used pepper spray before opening fire on the assailant.

Police spokesman Harald Soeros told AFP early on March 12 that the 26-year-old assailant "died on the spot" after being shot by the guard, who was in a sentry box outside the building.

The guard acted according to protocol and "did everything right", according to a defense ministry spokesperson.

The attack comes days after an unrelated string of knife attacks last week, in which a 23-year-old Afghan national admitted to a series of knife attacks in the city which left four people seriously injured.

On Monday, Austrian police the assailant's motives are "completely unclear" and the local branch of the domestic intelligence and anti-terror agency is looking into the case.
