  • Chung Hyeon of South Korea hits a shot against Roger Federer of Switzerland during their quarterfinals match at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells California

World number one Roger Federer equalled his best start to a season when he beat South Korea's Chung Hyeon to reach the Indian Wells Masters semi-final. Pete Sampras, 14 time grand slam champion, and two time calendar slam holder Rod Laver, watched on as Hyeon Chung found it impossible to break down Federer.

It is his best beginning to the season since 2006 when he started 16-0 and won 33 of his first 34 matches."It has been great".

"I think it's going to be a day session so depending on how much wind there is going to be I'm either going to be playing the wind or I'm going to be playing Borna", Federer said after his win, as quoted by the Express. "So I'm excited to play against him". Chung was clearly outplayed by Federer in the second set, but the match was really won when Federer broke Chung for a second time to close out the first set; up until that point the match was a very even contest with both players exchanging breaks and hitting the ball big from the baseline. Federer had a harder time holding serve compared to his match against Chardy (where he only dropped 5 points on serve), with Chung managing to break Federer in the first set despite the World #1 seeming in cruise mode.

The Croat advanced to his first Masters semifinal after outlasting Kevin Anderson 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Halep blasted two aces and broke Martic's serve four times."I just fought and that's maybe why I won because I refuse to lose", Halep said.Halep won the final five games of the third set after being broken once and falling behind 3-1 early. The turning point in the third set came for Halep after she won a challenge in the eighth game with Martic holding serve. The 45 points he earned by making the third round and 16 from the qualifying event, are likely to push Bhambri back to top-100 when the new rankings are issued Monday.

Chung Hyeon of South Korea shakes hands with Roger Federer of Switzerland after losing in straight sets in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells California

"I guess I had a similar good start to the year".

Federer arrived at Indian Wells knowing anything less than a semi-final finish would cede his world ranking back to Rafael Nadal, who is not playing this week.

Federer went on to win the title and at 36 is the No. 1 player again. "It was a really tough match against Pablo", Chung said. "I just was more focused on what I have to do, not thinking that much about the wind and what is going on on court".

Chung is not the only Asian tennis star on the rise at Indian Wells. I just enjoy the tour more than few years ago.
