  • Juan Martin del Potro stuns Roger Federer to claim Indian Wells title

But ultimately del Potro pulled off the victor, defeating the tennis legend in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2). "I'm still surprising myself, and I want to keep surprising the tennis tour". It was maybe a point here or there, maybe a shot, maybe a forehand, maybe a chip.

"At the end you saw we are appreciative of the finals that we played against each other, which I think is really important for both of us". "It was an easier match than I expected".

In the third set, Federer had the opportunity to serve for the match, holding two match points of his own, however del Potro was able to hold off any title-winning celebrations that the 36-year-old Swiss had foreseen to force deuce - before eventually securing the break.

Del Potro claimed a stunning four-set win over Federer at the US Open in September a year ago, but Federer won their last meeting in Basel a month later.

Del Potro was tipped as a future world No. 1 in 2009 after the then 20-year-old reached the Australian Open quarter-finals and the French Open semi-finals before capturing his maiden Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows.

Juan Martin del Potro handed Roger Federer his first loss of the year with victory in the BNP Paribas Open final at Indian Wells.

But he has made a strong start to 2018, winning his first ATP 500 title for five years at Acapulco earlier in March and returning to the world's top 10.

Canadian curling team edges South Korea 5-3 for emotional Paralympic bronze
Vernon's Curt Minard finished sixth in the first-ever Para snowboard banked slalom Paralympics event. South Korea previously beat Canada 7-5. "It was that close, and was definitely an exciting race".

An annoyed Federer barked at the umpire during a changeover and, fired up by his grievance, took the second set to even up the contest before pushing del Potro to the limits in the final stanza.

The Swiss maestro served for the set, and the title, but del Potro dug deep to save three match points, two at 40-15 down, before breaking back to send the stanza to a tiebreak, which the Argentine dominated.

Federer had to save a championship point after some superb, quick serves from Del Potro and then finally closed out the set on his fifth attempt.

Federer had a chance to serve out the match, but he could not add another victory on Sunday.

"I can not believe this moment", he said of his BNP Paribas Open victory. He closed out the win on his third match point when Federer's forehand failed.

"Roger and I were nervous during the whole match, and we felt that on court". Yeah, Juan Martin was a bit better at the end.

"I would like to play that tiebreaker again because I don't know what the hell happened", Federer said.
