A student who shot and critically wounded two fellow students at a Maryland high school has died after exchanging gunfire with a campus security officer, the county sheriff says.

Authorities say a 17-year-old student fired shots inside a hallway at Great Mills High School at about 7:55 a.m. Deputies said the shooter, identified as Austin Rollins, shot a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, both of whom are also students.

Sheriff Cameron, speaking to News 4 on Tuesday after the Maryland high school shooting, pointed out that even as fast as the student resource officer (SRO) responded, two students were still shot.

The attack, which lasted less than a minute, ended after the school resource officer, Deputy 1st Class Sheriff Blaine Gaskill, ran inside the building and confronted Rollins, with both firing a single shot nearly simultaneously.

Rollins was pronounced dead at a hospital in Charles County at 10:41 a.m., the sheriff said.

It is still unclear if the officer's bullet killed Rollins or if the teen shot himself.

Great Mills High School was placed on lockdown following the shooting and students were later evacuated from the school.

According to CNN's research, there have been 16 confirmed school shootings this year in the United States prior to today.

The officer was not harmed, Cameron said.

"If you don't think this can happen at your school, you are sadly mistaken", he said. "Great Mills is a wonderful school and somewhere I am proud to go".

Yet the 21-year age requirement, fingerprint requirement, fees, and licensing requirement, and sseven-day waiting period did not prevent 17-year-old Rollins from having a Glock 9mm pistol Tuesday morning. "You train to respond to this and you hope that you never ever have to", he said. After the incident, buses took students to Leonardtown High School, about eight miles away, where parents could pick them up. The cop was unhurt but the student was wounded and later died, the sheriff said.

A high school shooting in the USA state of Maryland on Tuesday has resulted in the death of the shooter and two others being injured, officials said.

One Twitter user Mollie Davis, claiming to be a student at the school, posted a message online saying: "There was a loud sound and everyone started screaming and running".

"Schools must be the most hardened targets in this country", said one of the Tweets, quoting NRA President Wayne LaPierre.

Larry Hogan, the governor of Maryland, called Gaskill a "tough guy".

"They're all different", Hoyer said of the school shootings that have occurred this year at a rate of "approximately two a week", but he added, "there is a common element". Police said they obtained a search warrant that led to them finding semi-automatic rifles, handguns and other weapons, along with ammunition.

The sheriff's office on the scene is working with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as well as FBI agents from the Baltimore office.
