Bryant told reporters after the announcement Wednesday that he has no qualms about Hyde-Smith's history as a Democrat.
Bryant has said he believes the president will campaign for Hyde-Smith in the special election, which could attract several candidates.
Women now make up about 19 percent of the House (slightly lower than the Senate's soon-to-be 23 percent).
The governor of MS is appointing state Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith to succeed fellow Republican Sen. What concerns some Republicans is that Mr. McDaniel's following on the right could, in a potentially crowded field, earn him a position in the runoff against a Democrat. "Her service as the Co-chairman of the Agriculture Policy Advisory Council for President Donald Trump has been instrumental in ensuring MS farmers and ranchers a voice during key decision making".
Cochran, chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, announced his retirement for health reasons on March 5.
Chris McDaniel, a tea party-backed state senator who almost unseated Cochran in a bruising 2014 Republican primary, said last week that he is running in the special election. But the governor has criticized McDaniel for switching races after he initially declared his candidacy against Sen. McDaniel had announced past year that he would be challenging Senator Roger Wicker, who is up for re-election in November, but decided in recent weeks to switch his candidacy to the race for Cochran's seat, a fact that makes it significantly more likely that McDaniel could win the primary and, by extension, the General Election given Mississippi's status as a strongly red state.
But Republican leaders have long viewed McDaniel as a problematic candidate.
After news broke of Bryant's appointment, McDaniel again charged the governor with following "the orders of the Washington establishment's Mitch McConnell" in appointing Hyde-Smith.
BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's Republican agriculture commissioner, who served on a farm advisory committee for President Donald Trump, was appointed Wednesday to succeed a veteran US senator who is resigning because of poor health.
Will there be a special election?
MS remained one of the last gaps for Democrats in that pledge. "She was a Democrat until a few years ago", said one Republican official, granted anonymity to speak candidly. Therefore, it has been noted with some surprise, that voter turnout is cited as the moving variable in numerous recent races where Republicans are losing seats to Democrats, not necessarily any sort of depressed sentiment toward the sitting President. Thad Cochran. Hyde-Smith switched parties in 2010 while serving in the state Senate. But Mr. Bryant had no appetite to go to Washington and neither did Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican who is hoping to succeed the governor in next year's election.
