The protests come 38 days after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed by a gunman with an AR-15. "I know that's not only what I want, but I know it's what you guys want", Alfonso Calderon, a junior at the Florida school, told Washington students at a pre-march event on Thursday. Students wore maroon T-shirts — the school's color — and chanted slogans such as "Enough is enough".

Throngs of people marched from Madison Park High School in Roxbury to Boston Common, a 2.5-mile walk meant to demonstrate the group's commitment to safer gun laws. They will pass the school in silence to honor the 17 victims of the February 14 shooting. Organizers expect 500,000 to descend on the nation's capital, including many from Parkland.

It said it hoped to, "show the United States government that the world is watching; to fight for our right to safety in the U.S.; and to hold lawmakers accountable and demonstrate that the majority of [US] voters want gun reform now".

The march in Omaha was one of more than 800 sibling events worldwide, set for the same day that hundreds of thousands congregated on Pennsylvania Avenue for the national March for Our lives. The group said in a statement that the state should address mental health and crime instead of gun ownership.

"There's a [Canadian] bill that was introduced on the 20th, it has a lot of really good amendments to the current gun laws", said Axelsson. The organization defines mass shootings as four or more shot or killed, not including the shooter. Survivors of last month's deadly school shooting organized the march.

After the shooting in Parkland, Delta said it would no longer offer discounted fares to NRA members to reflect its neutral status on the gun-control debate. Participants are fighting not just for students but for all victims of gun violence. "I want to see change".

PM congratulates Putin for re-election as Russian President
Administration officials said it was unclear if the President had seen the briefing memo that was leaked to the Post. According to the Kremlin, Trump and Putin discussed the need to restrict the arms race between the two nations.

"I think it's going to show the rest of the country - it's going to show politicians -- that we are not going to just talk about what we want", said Melanie Pillaca, 18, a former Stoneman Douglas student.

Kasky then said race is an issue in school shootings.

The demonstrators will assemble Saturday for a several-hour rally near the U.S. Capitol building that they predict will draw a half million people - many of them high school students.

Hundreds of sister marches also are planned across the country and around the world.

The president has ordered the Justice Department to ban bump stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons.

Edmonton's march is one of dozens being held across Canada on Saturday.

The poll by The Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research said the support for gun control is up from 61 percent in October 2016 and up from 55 percent since the poll first asked the question in October 2013. One way they hope to do that is by registering young voters and channeling energy into the midterm elections.
