  • 'Antaratma ki awaaz!' BSP MLA votes for BJP in Rajya Sabha polls

The BSP leader exuded confidence that all the nine surplus MLAs of the SP as well as seven of the Congress and one of the RLD have voted in favour of his party candidate.

BJP and its allies have 324 MLAs in the 403-member UP Assembly.

The BJP's Sameer Uranv and the Congress's Dheeraj Sahu won the two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand.

The BJP, which earlier held 54 seats in the Rajya Sabha, has now increased its standing to 69 seats in the House.

Yet in spite of the major win, the BJP-led NDA is short of the majority because the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has six members in the House, is no longer an ally. Of them, the BJP won 17. Opposition are supporting the BSP candidates but it lacks in the number along with the ninth BJP candidate.

Among prominent leaders who won were union finance minister Arun Jaitley and BJP's GVL Narasimha Rao.

Samajwadi Party candidate Jaya Bachhan too was elected to the Rajya Sabha. "Samajwadi Party le sakti hai, de nahi sakti (SP's opportunistic face has come to the fore in these polls... it can take but not give)". In the recent bypolls, Nishad Party had supported SP in Gorakhpur.

While Anil Singh claimed that he listened to "inner voice" and went with "Maharaj ji" (Adityanath), Agarwal, whose father Naresh Agarwal recently joined BJP, said: "SP chose a candidate who entertains over one who works for society..." SP had six of the 10 seats in UP. With none making it to 37, it fell onto second preference votes, in which the BSP was outnumbered. SP had sufficient numbers to ensure the victory of Jaya Bachchan.

BSP legislator Mukhtar Ansari and SP MLA Harnam Yadav could not cast their votes as they were in jail.

BSP national general secretary Satish Misra also echoed Mayawati's comments and said that they got the SP votes but it was the "misuse" of power by the BJP which led to the defeat of BSP candidate. The two Congress votes which were at the heart of the dispute were set aside.

The BJP will present this additional support from rival party MLAs as sign of its popularity in UP.

There were 59 Rajya Sabha that were to be filled. While in West Bengal.

All four Trinamool candidates - sitting Rajya Sabha member Nadimul Haque, and first time nominees Subhasish Chakraborty, Abir Biswas and Santanu Sen - are now rajya sabha members.

The ruling parties in Telangana and West Bengal also did well. The poll found the Congress suffering yet another setback.

In Chhatisgarh, 49-year-old Saroj Pandey secured a Rajya Sabha berth after she polled 51 votes while Congress candidate Lekhram Sahu managed only 36 votes.

Backed by the Asaduddin Owaisi's party, AIMIM, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) won all the three seats. Its candidates - B Prakash, AB Lingaiah Yadav and J Santosh Kumar - were chosen to the Upper House. "An environment of fear was created due to which there was some cross-voting done", said the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. The Congress fashioned a dramatic victory, winning despite having only seven votes.
