  • Good policy requires good data. It's time to open the door to research on US gun violence

"Welcome to the revolution", said Cameron Kasky, who was the first student speaker at the massive March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in downtown Houston in US southern state of Texas on Saturday for the "March for Our Lives" gun control rally, demanding the end of gun violence and mass school shootings. Moreno, who received a round of applause after flaunting her "F" rating from the NRA, said she received pushback from the NRA for attempts to prevent people convicted of stalking from possessing firearms, among other measures. And while they focused on ending school shootings, they called for progress on other violence in the community as well.

As Farnsworth and Young-Williams put the finishing touches on Saturday's program, they said all the pieces were falling into place. By continuing to "stand together" for the common goal of improving their city, Cotton continued, "we can do everything we need to do". She was at the march for them.

Protesters advocate more restrictive gun laws to help reduce gun violence - especially in schools - despite years of political gridlock on the problem.

A group of Caprock High School students organized this march and said they want to make a difference starting right here in Amarillo.

Among them is Daisy Noe from Bucks County, who says staying silent for another second is unacceptable, and she hopes their collective voice is enough to rattle some cages on Capitol Hill.

"This is how it begins", Police Chief Troy Oswald said motioning out over the crowd. This cohort which is committed to reducing gun violence is the ascendant voting constituency. After that shooting, survivors took to social media to decry gun violence and demand laws to curb it.

If someone says the best way to "stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun", the person is "probably just trying to sell two guns".

"I am here today to acknowledge and represent the African-American girls whose stories don't make the front page of every national newspaper, whose stories don't lead the evening news", Naomi said to cheers.

Another of the organizers, CBA junior Jessa Davidson, wanted the crowd to know this march was about more than just school violence.

New Orleans-area students joined a nationwide March for Our Lives March 24.

"I am amazed by these young people", Wagner Backus said.

"We need to follow their example", Chen said, "to show the legislators that we want change".

Although the official protest language doesn't offer specifics on gun control measures, numerous protesters want high-powered firearms like the AR-15 assault rifle to be outlawed.

Many attendees made signs for the march ranging from the politically pointed, such as "The right to bear arms meant muskets not machine guns!" and "Thoughts and prayers are not bulletproof", to the hopeful, including "The kids will lead us". "I wasn't there, but I knew people that go there, so it did affect home".

"We're going to need after school programs in place".

Catholic mom Liz Mora of Washington said she found hope in the day.
