Said White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah: "With respect to that interview, I will say that the president strongly, clearly, and has consistently denied these underlying claims, and the only one who has been inconsistent is the one making the claims".

Questions over the payment come after Daniels gave an interview to "60 Minutes" on Sunday, in which Daniels detailed the alleged sexual affair and claimed she was threatened in the past by someone affiliated with the Trump organization to keep quiet about the relationship.

Clifford has sought to invalidate the agreement, in part because she says Trump didn't sign it, and said her decision to speak out was driven by suggestions by the president's associates that she made up the story.

So far, Trump himself has remained uncharacteristically quiet on Twitter as questions arise about hush money paid to Daniels.

But Mr Shah said the president does not believe Ms Daniels' claim to be true.

Mrs Trump - who has not publicly responded to the claims made in Ms Daniels' interview - did not return to the White House with her husband on Sunday from Florida.

AP's Zeke Miller got things started by first asking why the American people should trust anything the White House says after the administration denied a shakeup was imminent, only to see a number of high-profile personnel moves.

Ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal claimed last week she had an affair with Mr Trump from 2006 to 2007.

This image released by CBS News shows Stormy Daniels, left, during an interview with Anderson Cooper which will air on Sunday on 60 Minutes.

An attorney representing President Trump's personal lawyer- Michael Cohen- says there was no legal issue with a $130 thousand dollar payment Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

"He just doesn't believe [the claim]", Shah said. He mentioned the president's recent claim before his top lawyer resigned last week that he had full confidence in his attorneys, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders' statement denying reports that H.R. McMaster was on his way out as national security adviser.

In terms of Daniels' "inconsistency", Shah was referring to a statement signed by the adult film star in January, denying any type of sexual or romantic affair.

Daniels attorney Avenatti said on NBC on Monday morning that the man who threatened his client while she was with her infant daughter was not Cohen but that "it had to be someone that is related to Mr. Trump or Mr Cohen". Earlier Monday, the president tweeted, "So much Fake News".

"Never been more voluminous or more inaccurate", Trump wrote.

"He knows I'm telling the truth. But through it all, our country is doing great!"
