  • Who Is Arnaud Beltrame? French Officer Who Traded Places With a Hostage During Terror Attack Dies

Lakdim, who was initially believed to have acted alone, held up a vehicle, fired on police and seized hostages in a supermarket on Friday, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an act of "Islamist terrorism".

Police officer Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame, who died saving the lives of hostages in the supermarket siege on March 23, will also be honoured in a separate national memorial in Paris soon, reports the BBC.

She was taken into custody hours after the gunman killed four people on Friday before being fatally shot by police who stormed the supermarket in Trebes.

Some 26,000 individuals suspected of posing a security risk to France are on the Fiche S watch list, of whom about 10,000 are believed to have been radicalised, sometimes in Salafist mosques, online or overseas.

National and local media in France have reported that the man claimed that he is carrying out the attack in the name of ISIL. The Morocco-born attacker was killed by police when they stormed the supermarket, with Beltrame's help.

The gunman who shot dead three hostages in a French supermarket has been pictured.

Heavily armed police also searched Lakdim's apartment in Carcassonne to search for clues as to his motives and weapon source.

Police arrested a woman connected to the attacker on Friday, a French prosecutor said.

Spring Snow Storm 3-26-18
Weekend high temperatures will likely top out in the mid 50s both days, which is close to average for late March into early April. Highs will range from the mid 40s in North Jersey and along the Jersey Shore, to near 50 degrees for interior South Jersey.

Lakdim shot and stabbed the policeman before anti-terror officers killed him.

Lakdim, armed with a gun, knife and homemade explosive devices, hijacked a auto in Carcassonne and shot the two people inside, killing the passenger and leaving the Portuguese driver in a critical condition.

An official with the police union told The Associated Press that the suspect was shot to death when police raided the market in the town of Trebes. Lakdim then went to a Super U supermarket in nearby Trebes, 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of Toulouse, shooting and killing two people in the market and taking an unknown number of hostages.

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May are among those who sent messages of condolence. As police negotiated with Lakdim to release the hostages, Beltrame offered himself in place of the final hostage. Macron has said security services are checking that claim.

Molins said that notebook scribblings found in Lakdim's house pointed to a man who wanted to pledge allegiance to Islamic State and was ready to die for the militant group. "Then I looked back and he wasn't there any more and I slipped out of an emergency exit".

France is part of a group of countries whose warplanes have been bombing Islamic State strongholds in Iraq and Syria, where the group has lost substantial ground in recent months.

"I know Arnaud: loyal, altruistic, and since he was small, working for other people, committed to the country", she said.

One multiple attack by Islamist gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in Paris while another killed close to 90 when a man ran a truck into partying crowds in the Riviera seaside city of Nice.
