The Ecuadoran government said Wednesday it had suspended WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's communications with "the outside", in a reference to its London Embassy, where the Australian national has been residing since 2012.

Assange has since gone silent on social media.

Ecuador gave Mr Assange asylum after he sought refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for investigation of sex-related claims.

Assange took to Twitter on Monday to question Britain's accusation that Russia was responsible for the nerve agent poisoning of a former Russian spy in the English city of Salisbury. Meanwhile, there's still an arrest warrant for him in Britain for jumping bail.

However, in recent days Assange has tweeted about his disapproval with several countries, including the USA, for their decision to expel Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in the United Kingdom earlier this month.

Assange's posts have "put at risk" the good relations Ecuador maintains with countries across Europe, Ecuadorian officials said in a statement.

Arrest made in connection with suspicious packages at DC-area military bases
The FBI continues to advise the public to remain vigilant and not touch, move or handle any suspicious or unknown packages. Law enforcement is looking at more than 5 locations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has 1 suspect in their sights.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ecuador said that the step had been taken because Assange had failed to abide by an agreement not to interfere in the South American country's relations with other states.

Assange could face charges in the United States that include espionage, conspiracy and theft over the publication of classified US documents on WikiLeaks.

Assange's internet access was also interrupted in 2016 after a WikiLeaks dump targeting Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

In December, Ecuador made Assange a citizen and unsuccessfully tried to register him as a diplomat with immunity as part of its efforts to have him leave the facility without risk of being detained.

Mr Assange, 46, has spent much of his time in his small room in the embassy tweeting and at times contributing to RT, a Russian state-owned television channel that broadcasts Kremlin messaging, as well as taking part in media conferences via video link. Due to this, and in order to prevent potential prejudices, the embassy in London interrupted this 27 of May communications overseas which Assange had access to.
