Trump Unusually Quiet As Rumors Swirl Around VA Chief Being Fired

  • Trump Announces Firing Of Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin

But his tenure took a sour turn on February 14 when the VA inspector-general reported that Shulkin and his wife had improperly accepted Wimbledon tickets and used staff to arrange site-seeing visits during a business trip to Denmark and England last summer. "I am thankful for Dr. David Shulkin's service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS!"

Richard Tubb, who trained Jackson, said in a letter read at Jackson's briefing that the members of the White House medical team have been "figuratively Velcro-ed" to Trump since the day after his election.

"We'll never have to use those words on our David", Trump said.

Although Shulkin repaid the money in question, foes in the White House and the VA, loosely allied with the Koch brothers-funded Concerned Veterans of America, used the opportunity to press for his removal.

Until Jackson is confirmed by the Senate, Trump said, Robert Wilkie of the Department of Defense will serve as acting secretary of the VA. "Mr. Wilkie is now the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness at the Department of Defense and overseas health affairs, welfare and quality of life for military families", the president said.

Shulkin had drawn fire for a damning report from the inspector general of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

One official said the criticism of Shulkin was "making it harder for him to carry out the duties of secretary of the VA, which is something the president has made clear is a big priority for him".

Trump thanked Shulkin via Twitter for his "service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS" and said Robert Wilkie, the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness, will serve as acting secretary until Jackson is confirmed.

Jackson, a rear admiral of the U.S. Navy, has been working as a presidential physician since the George W. Bush administration, and has monitored Trump's health since Trump became president. Trump seems to still be infuriated by Tillerson, said a person who spoke with the president.

"If Dr. Jackson can do that, immediately, he will do a lot to help his chances at confirmation", Fischer said.

It is the government's second largest department, responsible for nine million military veterans in more than 1,700 government-run health facilities.

Shulkin had pledged the VA would not be privatized on his watch but would provide veterans expanded opportunities to get private sector care.

At the time, he called for the head of the VA to "clean house". But Trump, a regular viewer of Fox & Friends commentator Pete Hegseth - a critic of Shulkin who once vied for his job- reportedly was irked by Shulkin's claims that he had full White House support.

Shulkin vociferously defended himself at first, insisting he did nothing wrong and accusing his detractors at VA of using the report to force him out. The IG report also said Shulkin improperly accepted tickets to Wimbledon for him and his wife.

Shulkin joins a long list of senior officials who have either resigned or been fired since Trump took office in January 2017.
