  • But how do we like them IRL

After a big shake up with revelations about Facebook data leak and then shedding light on the nexus between Cambridge Analytica (CA) and Indian political parties, whistleblower and firm director Christopher Wylie shared a list of Strategic Communication Laboratory (SCL) Group's Indian projects.

He said he eventually made a decision to speak out after US President Donald Trump's shock election victory, which he partly attributed to the misuse of personal data for political purposes.

It said that had deleted the data and added that "Christopher Wylie was a part-time contractor who left in July 2014 and has no direct knowledge of our work or practices since that date".

"They are an example of what modern-day colonialism looks like", Wylie testified.

"Wylie, who came to the hearing with his hair dyed pink, said that besides the work for Congress, CA has "done all kinds of projects" in India". "Who was the NRI businessman who hired Cambridge Analytica in the run-up to 2014 polls to manufacture false surveys, to ask leading questions and to bring down the government?", Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, according to the Economic Times. It is curious why, after such a long and successful run, they did no work in India after 2012, especially with a big election season in 2013-14.

"I've been getting a lot of requests from Indian journalists, so here are some of SCL's past projects in India", Wylie tweeted.

It said in 2011, SCL India undertook a state-wide research campaign to identify voter caste by household.

India talks tough to China, says ready for any situation
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said on Sunday that India was "alert" and ready to deal with any "unforeseen situation" in Doklam.

Wylie was speaking to the committee about his role at Cambridge Analytica, the data analysis firm at the center of Facebook's latest controversy. "But they do have offices there, they do have staff", Wylie said under oath.

Instead, data aggregators falling under Partner Categories supplement companies with data they may not otherwise have, helping marketers and Facebook target users better.

"Whether the personal data of Indian voters and users has been compromised by Cambridge Analytica or any other downstream entity in any manner, and if so, how was it compromised?" the notice stated. Other work included the 2003 Madhya Pradesh elections for a "national party" and electoral research and strategy for the JD (U) during the Bihar elections in 2010. Why is India's perpetually lying Law Minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) throwing allegations in the media.

Both the governing Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress deny hiring Cambridge Analytica's Indian counterpart for election campaigns and flung accusations at their rivals instead. "We said the server should be hosted in India only". In 2007 it worked in Uttar Pradesh elections and in the same year, it did a research communication campaign to support a trans-national programme in Kerala, Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and UP simultaneously.

"The problem is not with one entity [such as Cambridge Analytica] but a system which allows it", Pahwa said, pointing out that there is too much data floating around. The stock losses have reportedly cost Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg about $7 billion (£5 billion) in just the first few days following the reports of the data breach.

Wylie believes that it is "very reasonable" to say that CA's activities may have swung the Brexit vote, although he stressed he was not anti-Facebook, anti-social media or anti-data.
